For 40 years La Cuisine has been an exceptional destination for both the professional and home cook. Being an independent store and ecommerce site, we have a carefully edited selection of products that are simply the best, not to be confused with the most expensive. We feature talented artisans who produce unique products. At our store and website you will find useful tools, unusual ingredients, topical cookbooks, first rate kitchen linens, and potracks as well as humorous kitchen selections.
Some of the manufacturers we carry include: Mauviel, Messermeister, Shun, Sabatier 62, De Buyer, Pillivuyte, Piral, Lodge, Microplane, Le Jacquard to name a few. Featured artisans include Betsy Cukla of Hammer Song, Martin Merkle Springerle, Roger Martin Salad Bowls and Christmas Panel Chocolates from Lyon. And of course one of our most sought after items is the hilarious poster by Roger Blachon, which we call “Chaos in the Kitchen.”
About the Shop Owner
Nancy Purves Pollard (or you can use Nancy Pollard) got a brainstorm about selling really good cooking equipment in the Washington DC area when she was a language student in Germany. There she shared wonderful meals with fellow students (one of which was a French woman who took her copper stewpan with her wherever she travelled).
When she came back, she couldn’t find really good quality cooking utensils, or ingredients. So she connected with various European suppliers, unearthed some really good ones in the US (not so easy to do) and began to test shelf stable ingredients, finding cookbooks she liked and in general built up her street cred by cooking for 3 years with a Cordon Bleu Grand Diplome graduate.
The store is now celebrating its 42nd year and the Cuisinettes (as they like call themselves) are knowledgeable, frank if they don’t know an answer and willing to special order. if possible, something you can’t find. La Cuisine has established an ecommerce site and two e-newsletters. In addition they developed ways for all to taste top quality chocolates, vinegars and oils.
She and her husband live above the store with a rescue German Shepherd, which acts as their Canine Security in the shop. Two daughters are far flung, one in London and the other in Bologna.
