“I like eating, cooking and shopping. It all goes together.”
— Kyle MacLachlan, Actor
One of the great things about Old Town is the wide range of food options that nicely complement the many excellent shopping venues. One can work up an appetite visiting the many member shops in the Old Town Boutique District, so being able to rustle up some tasty grub is a great benefit!
Among my favorites:
- Caphe Banh Mi: A little hidden gem at 407 Cameron St., with excellent and reasonably priced food, frequented by local residents. The grilled steak salad and “Sloppy Viet” sandwich are delicious.
- La Tasca: This great Spanish restaurant on King features a large selection of excellent tapas. The selection of different sangrias is particularly welcome during the hot summer months. My favorite tapas include the fried eggplant with cabrales cheese sauce, the shrimp in garlic butter, and fried calamares. They previously had a wonderful all-you-can-eat lunch special, which is greatly missed.
- Los Cuates Fine Mexican Cuisine: I grew up in Southern California, so I’m fairly demanding about Mexican food. I have found Los Cuates’ food consistently very good, and particularly recommend the Cuates Calamari appetizer.
- Nicecream: this newcomer on King offers freshly made (using liquid nitrogen!) handcrafted ice cream, with some standard flavors and a variety of interesting special flavors, such as Nutella, Strawberry Basil, Pineapple Upside Down, and Bananas and Cream.
After doing some shopping and having a fine meal in Old Town, feel free to stop by Acme Mid-Century + Modern to sample a comfortable vintage lounge chair or modern bar stool, and enjoy a complimentary “damn good espresso” or café breve!
