Today’s post was written by Sara Lavan, Local Motion Studio.
The instructors in this interview are:
Renee Miller – Yoga and Aerial Yoga Instructor. Aerial Teacher Trainer.
Kristine Duba- Cardio Strength, Core Stretch, Core Strength, Cardio Circuit and HIIT Instructor.
Christine Heckel: Ballet and Pilates Instructor
Tess Dorrier: Cardio Strength, Barre, Pilates and Yoga Instructor
1) How long have you been teaching at Local Motion Studio?
Renee: Since 2014.
Kristine: Just over a year!
Christine: I’m not sure – during the first year that the studio was open.
Tess: I started teaching at Local Motion Studio in 2013
2) What keeps you coming back to teach here?
Renee: I love my students. I also love LMS’s willingness to embrace all types of movement and not only allow me to, but encourage me to try new things.
Kristine: The students, the positive atmosphere, and the friendly staff. Local Motion Studio attracts people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. It is truly a judgement-free zone with one common goal, to move and feel good! The students are dedicated and always thirsty for a challenge while seeking to increasing their own knowledge. The instructors share a wide variety of education and teaching methods while each specializing in their own craft. The overall environment is that of helping others, whether it is helping a student understand what may or may not work best for their body, or an instructor jumping in to help cover a fellow instructors class in a time of need or explaining a new method to help expand one-another’s teaching practices.
Christine: The studio is the one place that I find myself wanting to interact socially with the other instructors. Sara is so good at providing a vision that is both supportive of our independence and still has a united structure. It is such a feel-good a space to walk into and know that I’m going to teach students that are passionate about learning to move. This is a space that makes me want to come back and learn as a student rather than being a job that I want to leave at the end of the day.
Tess: I enjoy being part of a team of instructors that have an integrative and thoughtful approach to exercise and movement. My kids also love coming to the playroom while I teach!
3) What is one word you would use to describe the atmosphere here?
Renee: Supportive (with community as a close second)
4) How have you grown as an instructor since teaching here?
Renee: I think of LMS as my movement home base. I started as a student and now continue to grow in my role as a teacher. LMS has enabled my journey from doing yoga now and then, to regular practitioner, to instructor, to specialist (aerial), and most recently to teacher trainer. I can’t imagine another environment where I could have proposed a crazy idea (aerial yoga) and been supported to put it into practice! I learn from other instructors every time I take a class. I learn from my students every time I teach a class. This is my home, I’m growing up here. I cherish the gift, the opportunities and the shared journey
Kristine: Continuing education and workshops are always offered at Local Motion Studio as well as a reimbursement program which encourages instructors to expand their knowledge, learn new practices, and delve deeper into their teaching specialties. Expanding education is a huge part of the Local Motion Studio philosophy and has helped me continue to grow as an instructor.
Christine: I’ve been challenged to teach outside of the box of my own training. Taking classes from other instructors with an equal passion for safe and successful movement has been inspiring. Watching Sara and Sarah quietly lead the business has also helped me in my other endeavors as a small business owner. I look at them and say, “I want to lead that way and be the kind of boss who is supportive and still firm.”
Tess: I’ve been challenged to think about why certain modalities and movements are beneficial and how to make the benefits accessible to a wide audience.
